Book writing software for writing a novel in Bengali

TL;DR

Bengali conjuncts are the hardest shaping problem on this shelf after Nastaliq, and a PDF exporter that assembles them from separate glyphs prints nonsense. Galley shapes properly. Amazon does not sell Bengali at all, so the file is the whole product.

Why Galley is the right book writing software for a novel in Bengali

Bengali is a shaping script with a deep conjunct system, and it is the place where the gap between rendering and typesetting is widest.

Your browser shapes it correctly. Every text box on the internet does. So a writing tool can look right for months, and then the print PDF, which is a fixed page the tool draws itself, comes out as pieces: conjuncts split into their components, matras floating beside letters instead of attached to them, the reph in the wrong place. Galley shapes Bengali properly in the print PDF, with the book’s own script passed through to the shaper.

The second thing is search. A tool that strips combining marks to make search forgiving is right for Arabic and wrong here, because removing a matra changes the word. Galley keeps them.

The third is the market: Amazon does not list Bengali in any format. Not ebook, not paperback, not hardcover. So the file is the whole product, and there are more Bengali readers than there are French and German readers combined. A printer in Kolkata or Dhaka takes a print-ready PDF; every store that sells Bengali ebooks takes a valid EPUB.

Everything else is the same app: a true book page at your trim, the story bible beside the manuscript, a print-ready PDF and a valid EPUB.

How Bengali gets typeset

Conjuncts and matras are shaped, in the editor and in the print PDF.

Search keeps the matras, so a word is found by what it says.

There is no italic, because Bengali has no italic convention. The button is hidden rather than offering a slant.

There is no hyphenation, and justification is off by default.

Sorting is Bengali, so a cast list or a glossary comes out in Bengali order.

The typefaces you get for Bengali

Two faces, both under the SIL Open Font License.

Noto Serif Bengali is the reliable one, with the broadest coverage and a real bold.

Tiro Bangla was drawn by John Hudson for Bangla text setting and is the more literary of the two.

Two faces is a thin shelf next to the fifteen English gets, and that is the state of free Bengali book type, not a decision anyone made here. The typeface documentation lists every face by language.

Exports for a Bengali novel

  • Print-ready PDF at your trim, mirrored margins, real gutter, conjuncts shaped, font embedded.
  • EPUB 3 with your cover, tagged bn.
  • Store-ready EPUBs for Kobo and Apple Books.
  • Word and Markdown for an editor or an archive.

  • A proofreading PDF two pages to a sheet, and a large print PDF.
  • A watermarked copy per beta reader.

The Amazon-shaped tools switch off on a Bengali book and say why.

Bengali punctuation

Bengali ends a sentence with the danda ।, and sentence splitting in the app knows it, so a Bengali book’s sentence-length chart measures sentences rather than guessing.

Chapter headings are still the English default on a Bengali book. Getting the Bengali convention right wants a native reader, so the app lets you title chapters yourself. If you write in Bengali and want to tell me what it should be, say so.

How long a Bengali novel is

Bengali publishers quote length in pages and forms of sixteen pages. Galley counts words, live, per chapter and per book, and projects a page count at your trim, which is the number a printer works from.

The word count to page count converter should be a helpful resource for you.

Trim sizes for a Bengali book

Six standards, from mass market at 4.25×6.87 inches to Royal at 6.14×9.21. Bengali publishing commonly uses demy octavo, close to the Digest at 5.5×8.5 inches. Ask your printer before you choose. The spine width calculator and the trim size comparison would be helpful here.

Every field detects its own script, so a Bengali title and a Latin ISBN both come out right, and the download filename keeps the Bengali. The copyright page writes itself from the metadata you filled in. An ISBN comes from the agency for your country of publication, which for Bengali means India or Bangladesh depending on where you publish.

Translating into or out of Bengali

A translation in Galley is its own book: its own language, its own typeface shelf, its own ISBN, its own cover, still linked to the original, with the editor split so the original sits read-only beside what you write.

There are pages on writing a novel in Hindi, writing a novel in Urdu and writing a novel in Thai.

No machine touches the prose. Galley has no AI anywhere near your writing.

Self-publishing and traditional publishing in Bengali

Self-publishing. Amazon is closed, so print goes through a printer in Kolkata or Dhaka, or through IngramSpark, and the ebook goes to Google Play, Apple Books, Kobo or a regional store.

Traditional publishing. Bengali publishing runs through established houses in both West Bengal and Bangladesh, and the Ekushey book fair in Dhaka is a real part of the calendar. The submission package assembles the synopsis, the bio and the opening chapters.

The same book exports both. The longer arguments are in Galley for self-publishing and Galley for traditional publishing.

Where to go next

Questions people ask about writing a novel in Bengali

Does the print PDF shape Bengali conjuncts?

Yes. Bengali conjuncts and matras are shaped, not assembled from separate glyphs. An exporter that skips that step prints ক্ষ and স্ত as broken pieces, which is what most of them do.

Which Bengali fonts does Galley include?

Noto Serif Bengali and Tiro Bangla, both under the SIL Open Font License so Galley can embed them in a file you sell.

Can I sell a Bengali book on Amazon KDP?

No. Amazon does not list Bengali in any format. The print PDF goes to a printer in Kolkata or Dhaka, or to IngramSpark, and the EPUB goes to any store that sells Bengali.

Does Bengali get italics?

No. Bengali has no italic tradition, so the italic button is hidden instead of offering a mechanically slanted face.
