Why Galley is the right book writing software for a novel in Bengali

Bengali is a shaping script with a deep conjunct system, and it is the place where the gap between rendering and typesetting is widest.

Your browser shapes it correctly. Every text box on the internet does. So a writing tool can look right for months, and then the print PDF, which is a fixed page the tool draws itself, comes out as pieces: conjuncts split into their components, matras floating beside letters instead of attached to them, the reph in the wrong place. Bengali punctuation

Bengali ends a sentence with the danda ।, and sentence splitting in the app knows it, so a Bengali book’s sentence-length chart measures sentences rather than guessing.

Chapter headings are still the English default on a Bengali book. Getting the Bengali convention right wants a native reader, so the app lets you title chapters yourself. If you write in Bengali and want to tell me what it should be, say so.

How long a Bengali novel is

Bengali publishers quote length in pages and forms of sixteen pages. Galley counts words, live, per chapter and per book, and projects a page count at your trim, which is the number a printer works from.

Trim sizes for a Bengali book

Six standards, from mass market at 4.25×6.87 inches to Royal at 6.14×9.21. Bengali publishing commonly uses demy octavo, close to the Digest at 5.5×8.5 inches. Ask your printer before you choose. The spine width calculator and the trim size comparison would be helpful here.

Metadata and the copyright page

Every field detects its own script, so a Bengali title and a Latin ISBN both come out right, and the download filename keeps the Bengali. The copyright page writes itself from the metadata you filled in. An ISBN comes from the agency for your country of publication, which for Bengali means India or Bangladesh depending on where you publish.

Translating into or out of Bengali
