New features, updates, and enhancements in Galley
- Enhancement Print PDFs are about eight times smaller with no loss during compression.
- Enhancement Performance and cache improvements across exports. Previews are also much faster.
- Enhancement Galley works with a screen reader and a keyboard now. Many more accessibility features were added as well.
- Fix Quote marks are now based on the book’s language rather than defaulting to the English curly quotes. Russian and Ukrainian get «», German and Polish get „“, Danish gets »«, Swedish and Finnish get ””.
- Feature Japanese, Chinese, and Korean support added: chapter numbers in kanji, emphasis dots instead of italic, Japanese trim sizes, and the 奥付 colophon.
- Feature Show or hide invisible characters with ⌘⇧8. Same key Word uses.
- Enhancement Added Prologues, epilogues and interludes.
- Enhancement Share a copy sends adds URL as a new option aside from PDF and EPUB.
- Enhancement Generating shared URLs allows for expiry and passwords, as well as a visual indicator on whether the link was clicked
- Enhancement Column resize handles in tables are easier to grab with a stylus or trackpad on iPad.
- Enhancement Galley now says which languages KDP publishes, and switches off the KDP-only bits where it does not. Every export still works.
- Fix Japanese and Chinese print PDFs wrap their lines. They were running off the page.
- Fix A line of Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Hindi or Bengali starting with an English word now sets joined, and inside the margin.
- Fix A long table now splits across pages in the print PDF.
- Fix Improvements to make sure Urdu exports print, Arabic sets correctly in Scheherazade New, and Persian in Markazi Text.
- Fix Chapter titles and running heads set correctly in Hindi and Bengali too.
- Feature New text formatting options like strikethrough, headers, lists, superscript, subscripts, tables, and invisible characters.
- Enhancement Selecting text now offers formatting options above the tagging options.
- Enhancement A proofreading view shows spaces, line breaks and paragraph ends.
- Fix Shift+Enter line breaks and underlines reach the exports.
- Fix Numbered lists count in the book's word counts in Arabic, Urdu, Hindi, Bengali and Thai.
- Fix Arabic, Persian and Urdu chapter titles stop being letter-spaced.
- Fix Thai paragraphs break into lines in the print PDF instead of running off the page.
- Enhancement Thai, Japanese and Chinese books count characters, not words, everywhere a number is shown.
- Fix Urdu gets the line height Nastaliq needs, so lines stop overlapping.
- Feature Page break estimates are marked in the editor margin
- Fix A glossary or a cast list sorts in the book's own alphabet, not the browser's.
- Feature Books can be written right to left. Arabic and Persian are currently supported. New books set the writing direction based on the selected language, and can be changed.
- Enhancement Print PDFs of a right-to-left book mirror the gutter, move the running heads, and tell the reader which way the pages turn.
- Enhancement A Latin name or a number inside an Arabic sentence now sets the right way round in print.
- Enhancement EPUB and Word exports carry the book direction, so a reader and Word both lay it out correctly.
- Enhancement New books pick a language, and the typeface list narrows to faces that can set it.
- Enhancement Italic is hidden where the script has none, instead of doing nothing.
- Fix Book titles in any script now download under their own name, not underscores.
- Fix Search no longer drops Hindi and Bengali matras, which change the word.
- Fix Text fields set their own direction, so Arabic and Latin can sit side by side.
- Feature Margin comments in a Word file now come back with it, attached to the sentence your editor was talking about.
- Enhancement Every book typeface has a real bold now, including in Russian, Ukrainian, Greek and Bulgarian books, where bold came out as empty boxes.
- Enhancement Middle-click a book on the dashboard to open it in a new tab.
- Infra Books and chapters open faster with better auth checks.
- Fix The cast list no longer carries over from the last book you had open.
- Fix A new book could be created with chapters missing.
