His manner was not effusive. It seldom was; but he was glad, I think, to see me. With hardly a word spoken, but with a kindly eye, he waved me to an armchair, threw across his case of cigars, and indicated a spirit case and a gasogene in the corner. Then he stood before the fire and looked me over in his singular introspective fashion.

Two checks before you upload
KDP preflight checks the title, author, cover, blurb and page count, and tells you what Amazon would reject. Delivery readiness checks whether the book is actually finished. It flags empty chapters, a missing copyright page, unresolved comments, and permissions you haven't cleared yet.

Layout and ebook formatting in one place
Most people use one tool to lay out the print book and another to make the ebook. Both involve converting a manuscript, and that's where small formatting mistakes creep in. Galley doesn't convert anything, because the layout is set before you start writing. The trim, typeface, chapter openings, running heads and house style are part of the book, and the print PDF and EPUB are both made from it, so they always match.
Copies for other people
Share a copy adds each reader's name as a watermark, so you know whose copy is whose. You can send it as an EPUB or PDF, or as a link that opens the book in a reader. Links can have a password and an expiry date, and you can turn them off when you're done. The submission package is your book in standard manuscript format, with your synopsis and bio, in the order agents ask for. Your cover, blurb, ISBN, categories and keywords are all in one place, and the copyright page is filled in from them.
Series, editions and translations
You can group books into a series, and when you start the next book in it, it begins with the last oneâs story bible and design. You can make a new edition or a translation of a book, and it keeps the chapters and story bible and stays linked to the original. You can write the translation side by side with the original. Hyphenation and quote marks follow the language you choose, so a German edition uses German quote marks.
