Why Galley is the right book writing software for a novel in Uyghur

Uyghur in the Arabic script writes all its vowels, which is unusual for the script and which makes coverage the whole question for a book face. ې, ۆ, ۈ, ۇ and the initial hamza-carrier forms are all in ordinary running text rather than in dictionaries and Qur’ans, so a face that treats them as optional produces a page with holes in it. All three Naskh faces on Galley’s shelf carry the Uyghur set, and Scheherazade New, built by SIL for exactly the languages Arabic-only faces skip, has the deepest coverage.

The publishing situation is simple and closed: Amazon does not list Uyghur in any format. What that means in practice is that the file is the product, and Galley’s shape suits that. How Uyghur gets typeset

Direction is a print decision. The recto is the left-hand page, margins, running heads and folios mirror with the gutter, and both exports declare right-to-left page progression.

Letters join, so headings do not letter-space.

There is no italic, no hyphenation and no kashida justification. Set the book ragged right.

Uyghur punctuation

Uyghur uses the Arabic comma ، and question mark ؟ alongside the Latin full stop, all ordinary characters that survive typing and both exports.

Chapter headings are still the English default. If you write in Uyghur and want to tell me what the convention should be, say so.
