Accessibility

Galley is accessible, especially for users with screen readers. Here's what that includes.

Keyboard

Skip to the manuscript: Tab once on any book and link straight to the page you write on, past the toolbars and the binder.
Dialogs: Escape closes all dialogs. Tab stays inside while one is open, and focus goes back to where you were when it closes.
Every control is reachable: Including the ones that only appear on hover, like rename and delete on a chapter row. They show up when you Tab to them.
Resize the binder: Tab to the divider, then resize using the arrow keys. Shift for bigger steps, Home and End for the limits, Enter to reset.
Shortcuts: ⌘K for anything, ⌘F to find, ? for the full list. See Shortcuts & the palette.

The page: The page you're writing on is announced as a multi-line text box, named after the chapter you're currently in.
Saving: Saving is spoken as it changes. Saved, not saved yet, or saved on this device when you're offline.
Dialogs: Announced as dialogs, by label. While one is open the rest of the app is hidden, so you can't read past it by accident.
Buttons: Every icon button says what it does specifically with the intended action rather than just being announced as "button".
Messages: Anything Galley tells you is spoken. Errors interrupt your workflow, everything else is queued.

Contrast: All six accent themes meet WCAG AA standards, as does the rest of the interface.
Motion: Ask your system for reduced motion to prevent animations.
Zoom: The page scales with ⌘+ and ⌘−, this is in addition to the zoom for the trim size of your book.

Accessible EPUBs: Every EPUB declares how it can be read in the metadata retailers accept so ebooks you create meet accessibility standards. This is also required for ebooks sold in the EU since June 2025.
Large print: This is offered as a design preset: bigger trim, 16pt type, looser leading, ragged right. See Preview & export.

The command palette doesn't fully describe itself yet: ⌘K works with a keyboard and a screen reader reads the results, but it doesn't announce itself as a search with a list of matches. Same for the @ and # pickers.
Small screens: Galley asks for a desktop-width window. The manuscript page needs the room, and that applies to all devices at the moment.
