# Book writing software for writing a novel in Romanian

TL;DR Romanian ș and ț take a comma below, not a cedilla, and half the fonts in the world get that wrong. Every face on Galley's shelf carries the correct forms, the quote pair is the Romanian one, and the print PDF hyphenates on Romanian patterns.

## Why Galley is the right book writing software for a novel in Romanian

Romanian has the most-broken pair of letters in European typography and it is
worth being specific about why.

Ș and ț take a **comma below**. Turkish ş and ţ take a **cedilla**, which is a
hook attached to the letter. They are different characters and they look
different on a page. For years the Windows Romanian layout produced the Turkish
ones, plenty of fonts still carry only the cedilla forms, and the result is
Romanian text set in Turkish letters everywhere from street signs to novels.
Every face on Galley’s Romanian shelf carries the comma-below forms, and they
survive typing, search, sorting, both exports and the download filename.

The quotes are the second thing. Romanian quotes „low, then right”, and
English-first software gives you the curly pair. Galley picks the pair from the
book’s language.

The third is Amazon, and it is closed: **KDP does not list Romanian in any
format.** So the print-ready PDF and the valid EPUB are the whole product.

Everything else is the same app: a [true book page](https://usegalley.com/features/make-the-book) at
your trim, the [story bible](https://usegalley.com/features/story-bible) beside the manuscript, a
print-ready PDF and a valid EPUB.

## How Romanian gets typeset

**The comma-below forms go all the way through.** That includes the download
filename, so a book called Ținutul Tăcerii arrives under its own name.

**Hyphenation follows Romanian rules**, in the justified print PDF only.

**Sorting is Romanian**, so ă, â, î, ș and ț land where a Romanian reader expects
them.

**Italics work.** Every face here ships a real italic rather than a computed slope.

## The typefaces you get for Romanian

Fifteen faces, all under the [SIL Open Font License](https://openfontlicense.org/).
The comma-below characters are the coverage test.

**EB Garamond** is the safe first choice for a novel.

![Sample sentence in EB Garamond](https://usegalley.com/images/specimens/eb-garamond-en.png)

**Charis SIL** and **Gentium Book Plus** both come from SIL, whose entire
business is the characters other foundries skip.

![Sample sentence in Gentium Book Plus](https://usegalley.com/images/specimens/gentium-book-en.png)

The rest of the shelf: Crimson Pro, Cormorant, Lora, Libre Baskerville,
Literata, Source Serif 4, Spectral, Alegreya, Vollkorn, Cardo, Newsreader and
Libre Caslon Text. The
[typeface documentation](https://usegalley.com/docs/book-design#typeface) lists every face by language.

## Exports for a Romanian novel

- **Print-ready PDF** at your trim, mirrored margins, real gutter, font embedded.

- **EPUB 3** with your cover, tagged `ro`.

- **Store-ready EPUBs** for Kobo and Apple Books.

- **Word and Markdown** for a redactor or an archive.

- **Manuscript format**, double-spaced.

- **A proofreading PDF** two pages to a sheet, and a **large print PDF**.

- **A watermarked copy per beta reader**.

The Amazon-shaped tools switch off on a Romanian book and say why.

## Romanian punctuation

The quote pair you get automatically. Romanian dialogue is set with a dash at the
head of the line, and quoted speech inside a paragraph takes the low-right pair
with «guillemets» for a quote inside a quote. All of them are characters you
type.

If you have inherited text from an older file, the cedilla forms are worth
sweeping for. Book-wide [find and replace](https://usegalley.com/docs/revision#find-replace) will
convert them in one pass, and the
[style sheet](https://usegalley.com/docs/the-story-bible#style-sheet) is where to record that you did.

## How long a Romanian novel is

Romanian publishing quotes length in coli de autor and in characters, and Galley
counts words with a projected page count at your trim, which is the number the
printer needs.

The [word count to page count converter](https://usegalley.com/resources/word-count-to-page-count)
should be a helpful resource for you.

## Trim sizes for a Romanian book

Six standards, from mass market at 4.25×6.87 inches to Royal at 6.14×9.21.
Romanian trade fiction is commonly issued around 13×20cm, close to the Digest at
5.5×8.5 inches. The
[spine width calculator](https://usegalley.com/resources/book-spine-width-calculator) and the
[trim size comparison](https://usegalley.com/resources/book-trim-size-comparison) would be helpful here.

## Metadata and the copyright page

The [copyright page](https://usegalley.com/docs/publishing#copyright-page) writes itself from the
metadata you filled in. A Romanian ISBN comes from the Biblioteca Națională a
României.

## Translating into or out of Romanian

A translation in Galley is its own book: its own language, its own typeface
shelf, its own ISBN, its own cover, still linked to the original, with the editor
split so the original sits read-only beside what you write.

There are pages on [writing a novel in Hungarian](https://usegalley.com/book-writing-software-hungarian),
[writing a novel in Italian](https://usegalley.com/book-writing-software-italian) and
[writing a novel in Bulgarian](https://usegalley.com/book-writing-software-bulgarian).

No machine touches the prose. Galley has
[no AI anywhere near your writing](https://usegalley.com/blog/no-ai-in-your-prose).

## Self-publishing and traditional publishing in Romanian

**Self-publishing.** Amazon is closed, so print goes through a Romanian printer
or IngramSpark and the ebook goes to Google Play, Apple Books, Kobo or a
Romanian store.

**Traditional publishing.** Romanian houses read submissions directly. The
[submission package](https://usegalley.com/docs/publishing#where-it-goes) assembles the synopsis, the
bio and the opening chapters.

The same book exports both. The longer arguments are in
[Galley for self-publishing](https://usegalley.com/blog/galley-for-self-publishing) and
[Galley for traditional publishing](https://usegalley.com/blog/galley-for-traditional-publishing).

## Questions people ask about writing a novel in Romanian

### Does Galley use the comma-below forms of ș and ț?

Yes. Every face on the shelf carries the correct comma-below characters, which are the Romanian ones, and not the Turkish cedilla forms that half the world's fonts substitute.

### Which quote marks does a Romanian book get?

The low-then-right pair, „like this”, which is the Romanian convention. The rule follows the book's language.

### Can I sell a Romanian book on Amazon KDP?

No. Amazon does not list Romanian in any format. The print PDF goes to a Romanian printer or IngramSpark, and the EPUB goes to any store that sells Romanian.

### Does Galley hyphenate Romanian?

Yes, on Romanian patterns, and only in the print PDF when you justify.
