# What You See Is What Prints: Writing on the Real Book Page

Open almost any writing software and you get a text box. The book itself, the
trim, the type, the margins, the way a chapter opens, stays hidden until you
export and cross your fingers. Galley flips that around: the page you write on is
the page that prints.

## Draft on the finished page

Pick your [trim size](https://usegalley.com/blog/choosing-a-trim-size) and one of 15
[real book typefaces](https://usegalley.com/features/write), and that’s the surface you write on. Not
an approximation, the actual page. Scene breaks render as scene
breaks, chapter openings drop the way they will in the printed book, folios sit
where folios sit.

Why bother? Because abstraction is the enemy of good formatting. When the book is
a mystery box you only open at the end, formatting becomes a separate, stressful
phase where everything you assumed turns out slightly wrong. When you can see it

## No compile, no surprise
